Golfer’s Day Highlights

Today is Golfer’s Day.  In honor of today, we’re going to give you some PGA history and highlight a local country club.

The Professional Golfers Association (PGA) held its first championship tournament on this day in 1916.  Britisher James Barnes won the first PGA Championship title.   A lot has changed in the PGA since that day in 1916.  In 1958, the event itself was changed to a 72-hole, stroke-play game.  In 1950, the LPGA for women golfers was instituted.  In 1982, the Senior PGA Tour for players 50 and older was started.

Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus are two players who won the title five times.  In addition, Hagen holds the record for most consecutive wins from 1924 through 1927.  In 1964, Bobby Nichols won with the lowest 72-hole total of 271.  The oldest champion was Julius Boros, who won at 48 in 1968.  In 1922, Gene Sarazan was given the title of youngest champion for winning the PGA title at age 20.

Locally, the River Oaks Country Club (ROCC) is a private country club, which is located in the River Oaks area of Houston.  It has an 18-hole championship course which is surrounded by the large trees and lush landscaping.

The club has some interesting history.  In 1940 it was the venue for the Western Open Golf Tournament and in 1946 for the Houston Open Golf Tournament.  In 2007, the United States Tennis Association announced that the club would host the US Men’s Clay Court Championships beginning in 2008 and to this day the events of this tournament are still hosted by the River Oaks Country Club.

In addition, to hosting golf and tennis tournaments, the club is known for hosting the most immaculate of weddings and receptions in its large ballroom.  The gorgeous ballroom is described as the “epitome of elegance.”  The club is also known for hosting fashion shows poolside.

The ROCC is a grand property with impeccable landscaping and greens.  The club has a number of dining locations throughout the property, both formal and casual and fine cuisine is served throughout.  It’s also known for its exemplary service to members and guests.

Moreover, the club is well-known for its philanthropy.  The generosity of the club’s members established the River Oaks Country Club Scholarship in appreciation of the employee’s dedication to service.  The scholarship was designed to assist with higher education of employees and children or grandchildren of employees.

As of today, there’s a long waiting list for membership to the club.
